Nicolas Letzter, landscape architect

The Saanenland is my home, and here I design gardens that belong to their surroundings.

Atelier Letzter is a one-person studio in Schönried. I draw every plan myself and am on site during construction. Nothing gets lost between design and garden.

Approach

Starting from the place

A garden in the mountains should continue the landscape. I use few, clear elements: a wall where the terrain needs one, a terrace where the evening sun falls, a meadow that reaches up to the house.

Wherever possible the materials come from the region: limestone and granite for walls, larch that turns grey without any coating, gravel from the valley. I plant what grows here: sycamore, rowan, serviceberry, meadows from regional seed. A garden like this needs little maintenance and gets better over the years.

Saanenland

Rooted in the region

I live and work in the Saanenland. I know its terrain, climate and building tradition from being outdoors: where the snow lies longest in spring, where the snowplough passes in winter and which plants survive the cold months without protection. All of this goes into every plan.

For construction I work with landscape contractors, stonemasons and carpenters from the region. Short distances and familiar faces make the building phase calmer, for you and for your neighbours. Discretion towards my clients goes without saying.
